Revising My GAME Plan

I think I have accomplished the first goal, to communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital tools. My class web pages are going well. I have a student aid that helps to enter daily assignments. Parents and students are referring to the website on days when students are absent to get their assignments. I will continue with the web site throughout the school year and asked for students’ and parents’ feedback.

My second goal, facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity by promoting student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning and creative process, is progressing. My students are putting together their digital portfolios so they can create a presentation at the end of the year in place of a written final. I continue to monitor the students and their work as new concepts are mastered.

The next goal I would like to tackle is: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity by modeling collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.
GOAL: I want to become more familiar with tools that help students collaborate with each other and students in different schools

Action: I want to find other educators that use collaborative tools and learn the advantages of each one. Why do some people use blogs, wikis or google docs? I will take workshops and classes to help me become comfortable in setting up and managing these tools

  1. Nancy,

It seems like you are well on your way with your GAME Plan. I think it is great that your website is updated daily by your students and that is a super resource for parents. I am going to steal that idea and assign a student to put the assignment on my site on a daily basis, thanks!

Digital portfolios are awesome. Last year, my students each had their own wiki where they put all their language arts writing pieces. This not only saves on paper but allows students to read their peers work. This results in better editing and proofreading because none of them want their work to be full of mistakes.

The idea of collaborating with other students from other schools is an idea that I would like to do too but I have to admit that it just seems doomed for failure. I just feel that I need to know the cooperating class's teacher and would need assurance that they would put in the effort needed for this to succeed. I will eventually do this. I wish you success with this.

    Good Luck!

  2. Nancy,

Congrats on accomplishing your first goal. It's really cool that you have a student aid who can enter everything in for you (more or less). I have started using class web pages for each of my classes but I found it was taking too much time... but after hearing about a student doing it, I've decided to give BONUS points to some of my students to put everything on.

I really like your idea of using digital portfolios- I think that's great!!! Is there a particular program that you use? How do they create it?

Well, it seems like you are well on your way to accomplishing your goals and it's great that you are setting new ones as well.

    Good luck!

  3. Jessica,

All students in our district have a personal file in a student drive. Students can create and save folders just like on their personal computers. This file stays with each student as long as they remain in the district. Students contribute to this portfolio from kindergarten through graduation. It has been great to assess student growth in all areas but in writing specifically. Students are saving their artifacts for their final project in their student files.

  4. Nancy,

I love the idea of having the students contribute to your site. How authentic. Not only will students be motivated, but maybe the parents will pay attention too. Also, creating a wiki for them to share their work is very powerful. Keep up the good work on your GAME plan.

  5. Nancy,

I have heard of other teachers in addition to you, who have their students update their classroom blogs or websites. I am one of those teachers who struggles to give up control to the students and have been hesitant to let my students update our classroom blog. Now I see that there is nothing to fear and they will most likely do a better job then me! On our blog we have our daily assignments, spelling words, links to educational websites, and posts about thoughts, classroom happenings, reminders, etc. How rich would it be to have my students do all of the updating and have them post their thoughts about the day's learning! Thanks for your inspiration, Nancy.
